This time I won a tournament with over $700 players and netted $728!!!

This tournament was a $5 buy in "Turbo" tournament. I don't play those much but I may start more and more. Instead of the customary 8 or 12 minute blind escalations the blinds escalate every 3 minutes. And remember unlike our home game the blind escalations are very very steep, usually doubling each round or two.

In this kind of tournament I try to play alot of hands early before the blinds get out of hand and I got lucky a couple of times and got some donkeys to give me all their chips. Because of the size of the tournament the top 80 were paid. I was able to get into the top 40 pretty easily but the blinds had escalated so much by that point you were easily going to go all in in any hand, and better be prepared to. I limped into the top 20 but was in 18th place and the blinds were almost half my chip stack. i won several hands all in and made it to the final table as the chip leader. I took out like 5 straight players and finally got the table to succumb to my chip stack.

Pretty cool, and the money does not hurt either. My goal is to win enough of a bankroll to start playing some of the qualifier tournaments for the WSOP next Spring and win a ticket to the 2007 WSOP. We will see if I can keep it up.

Dustin M. Conspiracy? Hmmm... I mean, it's not like he's been busy with a mayoral campaign, directorial auditions, and a Floridian vacation... let's get on the ball here!

Heh heh... seriously, though... any news or thoughts about the next game? I know December might be very ugly for people, but I'm not looking forward to a two month gap. Maybe an alternative, non-sanctioned game can be held if a Frog game isn't possible - maybe at our place. And besides, that will give Mark a chance to win another game, since it won't count. :-)

Greg J. We're now two games into the season, and some interesting effects have happened. As imaginable at this point, there is a tie at the top for first place between our two winners; new to the mix, though, I join them with two third place finishes that equal a first... if last year's system had been in place, I wouldn't even be in the running. Similarly, Dustin remains on the boards and only two points out of the lead with two fourth place finishes - which would have yielded nothing in last year's system as well.

Interesting to note the differences... if last year's system was in effect, it would be Michelle and Heather tied for first (2 pts. each) and Pam and Kimberly tied for next position (3rd with 1 pt. each). Instead, it's Michelle, Heather, and me tied for first (4 pts. each), Pam and Kimberly tied for next position (4th with 3 pts. each), and Dustin sneaking onto the board in 6th (2 pts.).

So, basically, the new system has made the difference between first place and no place for me, and on the board and off the board for Dustin - but no other difference so far. Heh heh heh... let me officially say I am in favor of the new system... heh heh.

Greg J. Here is what I originally posted:

I am not sure this is a voting thing or part of the enforcement powers of the commissioner but I would like to think about enforcing the normal rules concerning raises in poker. The standard rule adhered to by every poker body is simply this: raises must be equalt to at least the previous bet. For example, if there is a bet of $100 on the table, you would have to raise by no less then $100, making a total bet of $200. A reraise would then have to be no less then $200 more dollars totalling $400.

The reason for this is at both simple and complex. The simple reason is to keep from long drawn out minimum increment raises. It keeps the game flow going. The second reason is for bet strategy. Betting certain large dollar figures knowing your opponent, to raise would have to either go all in or have to risk a good portion of their stack. It is beneficial to both Big stack and short stack at the table.

Dustin M. All the suggestions appear to involve expanding the system with more points, although there are differences about the details and breadth of that expansion. I suggest we post discussion here as comments under this post regarding the potential rules change, so that we all have a chance to talk it out before we need to vote. Personally, it's no skin off my lily pad, and I'll be happy to abide by any rule change. Not that you care about my opinion anyway... *sniff sniff*

* Important note: one rule proposal has already been made by Dustin in this regard: that 1st place count for 4 points, 2nd place count for 2 points, and 3rd place count for 1 point.

Back to the Hipius home

Well, I'm back in East Syracuse again, spending some time with the Hipiuses. I do enjoy staying here, as I get to go to exciting places... last time, they took me on vacation in Gettysburg, and I got to enjoy a celebrity photo shoot on the battlefield; this time, Greg has promised me another trip, but he won't tell me where we're going... I'll be sure to post some vacation pictures when I get back!

Speaking of that game, boy that was a scarry one... both Pam and Mark were so very close to taking me home for the first time, and I don't think it can be much longer at all until one of them does... they both are tough competitors. I was impressed with Greg Holtham's game, too - he made another very tough showing, proving for the second tournament in a row that he is a real survivor when the chips are low, coming back to life again and again.

I'm looking forward to our big day at the end of this month, of course... the BBQ will be a blast!

Poker Frog, June 3rd Results

Once again Greg J. Hipius has brought the frog home with him. And this time his win is doubly sweet as it has assured him the Regular Season Championship after starting the night tied with Dustin M. Czarny. Dustin though went on early, being busted out by his own daughter, Kimberly. The night wore on and Greg continued to build up his chip lead busting out previous month winner Michelle Berthod. It came down to three, Mark Holt, Greg Hipius, and Pam Hipius. Greg's chip stack waned as Mark and Pam siphoned off chips left and right. But Greg masterfully slow played a royal straight suckering Mark into an all in bet and taking his entire stack. The stage was set for our first couple showdown as Greg and his wife Pam squared off for the trophy. But after a crippling blow where Greg caught a full house on the river the 2s over Aces. He eventually brought home the Traveling frog trophy and took time to pose with what will become the Regular Season trophy as well.

Any thoughts on the evening?

Dustin M.
